Introduction

Draw inspiration from the words and insights of America’s leading creative minds.

Since 2005, Debbie Millman has been regularly interviewing some of the most brilliant figures in the creative world to discuss their lives and work. While many guests have been influential in graphic design, today Millman is just as likely to interview writers or Broadway directors as she is illustrators or graphic artists. As you’ll soon discover, design is everywhere – on the page, stage, screen, in the clothes you wear, and the packaging of your food. Ultimately, design is about communicating ideas; it’s the essence of art, creativity, and life.

If you’re a subscriber to Debbie Millman’s interview podcast *Design Matters*, you’ll know how enjoyable it is to hear the insights of designers, illustrators, directors, songwriters, photographers, and other creatives. While we’ll explore many of the insights shared by Millman’s guests here, this book is an adaptation of a book that originated from a podcast. So, while we can’t capture the experience of listening to the guests directly, we can highlight the key ideas that make these individuals such exceptional creatives. To do so, we focused on two core questions while creating this book: What common themes do creative minds share? And, of course, why does design matter?

In this book, you’ll discover:

– how constraints can fuel creativity,

– that drawing serves as a universal language, and

– why embracing your fears is essential for growth.
