Introduction

Discover the hidden history of America and understand its significance.

The British pirate ship White Lion arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, carrying twenty to thirty enslaved Africans who had survived unimaginable hardships. These individuals, bound together by suffering and uncertainty, played a crucial role in the formation of the United States. They had been captured from a Portuguese slave ship that had departed from present-day Angola. At the end of their harrowing journey, they were sold to the English colonists in exchange for supplies and provisions. In 1619, an event occurred that initiated the trade in enslaved people, leading to millions of women, men, and children being kidnapped and sold into perpetual forced labor in American camps. The immense wealth and subsequent social and political power generated from slavery played a significant role in the country’s formation. Thus, 1619 represents an alternative origin story for the nation’s founding, differing significantly from the traditional narrative.

Despite its significance, most people are unaware of this date. Only 8 percent of US high school seniors are familiar with the history of slavery, and just half of US adults know that enslaved people were held in all 13 colonies.

This lack of awareness isn’t by chance. It is convenient to omit the history of slavery from the public narrative, favoring the tale of “determined pilgrims who fought for freedom” instead of addressing the violence and human rights violations committed by the Founding Fathers.

However, without acknowledging the past, we can’t fully grasp the issues we face today. The legacy of 1619 is still very much present, embedded in our institutions, social systems, and laws.
