Introduction

Stay informed on the issue of gun control.

After each incident of gun violence in the United States, the debate resurfaces, drawing attention from both sides. Gun control advocates emphasize that the frequency and scale of these events are unmatched, as no other developed nation experiences such regular attacks. They argue that inadequate firearm legislation is the root cause and that stricter regulations are the only way to address the problem.

On the other hand, the pro-gun lobby asserts that “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” They argue that the real issue lies with violent or mentally unstable individuals, not the availability of firearms. They also stress that implementing stricter gun regulations would, in their opinion, violate the constitutional right of U.S. citizens to own and carry weapons.

Passionate arguments and strong opinions are naturally part of such a highly charged debate. However, facts and data are equally important. This book won’t take sides or argue for one perspective over the other. Instead, it aims to offer a clear summary of how firearms are used and regulated in the U.S., allowing you to draw your own conclusions.

A quick note before we begin: The Gun Debate was published in 2014, so it doesn’t reflect any legislative changes made since then. In the following key points, you’ll learn:

– who is most likely to own a firearm in the U.S.;

– the main arguments presented by both sides of the gun control debate; and

– how gun policy has historically been shaped in the U.S.
