Key idea 1

While it is conceivable, success without leadership is constrained.

Nowadays, it appears as if everyone is praising leadership, but why?

It all boils down to what it takes to succeed in life, I suppose. Mastering four fundamental skills—relationships, self-directed learning, attitude, and leadership—is the key to real success. The influence of the first three is multiplied by the fourth, which is leadership.

Why is leadership crucial? because all other success factors are related to leadership qualities. Leaders are disciplined in getting the task done and are skilled at setting priorities. Leaders develop trust in their followers by really considering what matters most.

In other words, effective leadership may determine success in various spheres of life.

Consider Dick and Maurice, two brothers. In 1937, these brothers established a drive-in eatery in Pasadena. They established a restaurant where customers were given dinner in their automobiles, replete with china and silverware, because they saw the potential in California’s flourishing automotive culture. Their car-hop business was a big success, and by 1940 they were making astronomical sums of money. Nonetheless, they could tell that drive-in culture was fading by 1948. Thus, they made the wise choice to convert from a car-hop to a walk-up restaurant. They changed from china and cutlery to paper and plastic for the menu in order to concentrate on hamburgers. With the adjustments, their revenues more than quadrupled, and they established a second facility.

And if it weren’t for the arrival of a visionary leader, Ray Kroc, the narrative of Dick and Maurice McDonald might have stopped there. While the McDonald brothers want to expand, they did not want to take on the additional labour of operating other locations. Knowing about franchising, Kroc saw the opportunity presented by McDonald’s expansion into several cities. He joined forces with the brothers to start the McDonald’s Company in 1955. They added 100 more eateries throughout the course of the next four years. There were 500 people four years later.

Ray Kroc purchased the rights to McDonald’s in 1961 at slightly under 2.7 million dollars. McDonald’s restaurants may now be found almost everywhere in the globe. While Dick and Maurice McDonald put a lot of effort into their job and were highly successful, it needed a leader to see the company’s full potential, create a vision, and assemble the ideal team to help it expand into a global sensation.

Key idea 2

The journey of leadership never stops.

It’s wonderful if Ray Kroc’s inspirational tale serves as motivation. Yet not only leaders may exercise leadership. Spoiler alert: individuals at the top of the corporate food chain may not even be leaders. They may not even be aware of the chances they’re passing up or the potential effect they might be exerting.

No of where you are in your leadership development, knowing the four leadership stages is a wonderful place to start. That’s correct; there are four separate phases to the process of leadership.

Recognizing that, like everyone else, you don’t know what you don’t know is the first step. You can’t know everything right away, regardless of whether your goal is to advance in a new position or strengthen a significant relationship. It requires inquiry, introspection, and investigation to identify your blind spots, yet while you go through this process, you’re already moving on to the next stage.

The second stage is realising what you don’t know. This can be a stage you go through repeatedly throughout your path, and that’s okay. Effective leaders continue to learn throughout their lives so that they can lead tomorrow. They incorporate knowledge into every aspect of their everyday life, whether it is reading, listening to audiobooks, or studying. Phase three will go smoothly if this is done.

Phase three is having faith that your growth will be seen. The key to this stage is to be patient with yourself. Knowing that no one becomes a great leader over night may be helpful. Even individuals with innate talents must put forth effort. And even while it can seem odd at first, developing the self-control and tenacity to work at it every day pays dividends. In addition to the advantages growing with time, you’ll also gain confidence in your skills and talents, which leads us to phase four.

At the last stage, everything comes together and leadership begins to flow effortlessly. Remember, everyday practise is required; don’t expect this to happen overnight. The good news is that your leadership growth is a continuous process, regardless of where you are right now. Each good leader you know relies on a self-development strategy to keep up with and advance their talents, you can be sure of that.

But what additional qualities do good leaders acquire over time? We’ll start with it next.

Key idea 3

You are the one you lead first.

How can you develop discipline and persistence in yourself if these qualities are essential to the four stages of leadership? Well, this too can be accomplished in a few easy steps.

First, challenge your justifications in order to build discipline a little more. Consider Jerry, a talented football player for his high school. On a hot Mississippi day, Jerry was discovered slipping back to the locker room to avoid participating in the team’s uphill sprints. Don’t quit, he said to himself, furious at himself for being lazy. He was aware that if he continued to give up, it would start to seem normal.

Jerry Rice is now renowned for his unwavering commitment to daily training and self-discipline in addition to his great sports leadership. Giving up was never acceptable, which had an influence on every facet of his amazing professional career.

After challenging your justifications, increase the difficulty by withholding positive reinforcement until your objectives have been met. There are a few advantages to this. First, you risk rewarding yourself before the task is finished if you lack self-control. This has extra, detrimental repercussions, much like having dessert before your veggies. You may lack self-discipline if you have many excellent ideas but aren’t making much progress in your life.

It’s crucial to maintain your attention on the end goal after disputing your justifications and conserving incentives for a job well done. You may prevent yourself from giving in to self-pity, which is a natural adversary of self-discipline, by focusing on the outcomes rather than the short-term pain of your new habit.

Lastly, be aware that your time and effort priorities are crucial. The 20-80 rule is a widely used business guideline. An organization’s success is often attributed to only 20% of its members. And the best 20% of projects generate 80% of the money. So, it’s typical for effective leaders to devote 80% of their time on their top 20% of objectives. This applies to regular life as well. Give the top 20% of your priorities or individuals 80% of your attention or resources.

Even while your priorities will inevitably change over time, being conscious of your options might help you reorient yourself swiftly. It’s common for us to miss the genuinely significant things until it’s too late. Only concentrate on those things that are most crucial since having too many might make you paralysed. Lastly, it’s OK to give the things that will repay you the greatest priority. Nothing boosts your motivation like concentrating on what makes you happy.

Key idea 4

The most valuable resource in leadership is trust, which serves as its cornerstone.

One of the most crucial things you can learn about leadership as you develop is how trust works. Consider starting your first day at a new job with a pocket stuffed with small cash. Every wise choice you make increases the amount of money you have in your pocket, while every error loses you money. Despite your best efforts, making too many bad choices can eventually drain your bank account.

Similar to this, every leader enters a new position with some level of goodwill. The behaviours of a leader over time determine whether or not this trust succeeds.

Competence, connection, and character are the three fundamental qualities you must exhibit to win people’ trust, yet they are not all the same. For instance, many people may overlook a leader’s sincere error or lack of proficiency, particularly if they are inexperienced or always seeking to improve. Yet, moral failings or betrayals may leave a lasting impression.

Character, like self-control, is the key to effective, long-lasting leadership. It not only conveys strength and constancy to people around you, but it also shows a genuine bond with them. Respect is communicated to others around you via character. A leader builds mutual respect and trust, which elevates any team, when they make wise choices, are willing to face up to their errors, and put the needs of their followers above their own.

What happens when all this mutual regard and trust has been built? As we’ll see next, that’s when the true power of leadership is shown.

Influence is a key indicator of successful leadership.

At the outset of this fast tour of the foundations of leadership, we made a bold assertion – that leadership is the “secret sauce” that multiplies and amplifies your success. Let’s investigate this a little more. We’ll start by examining the reasons why poor leadership sometimes succeeds.

Even ineffective leaders have a lot of influence in company, which they may take use of. After all, they have influence over the wages and working conditions of their staff. The same is true of military command, where insubordination may be punished or ordered to stop using rank. Despite the fact that young children are reliant and have no option but to follow, parents may still be inadequate family leaders.

Nevertheless, none of this is applicable to volunteer groups, charitable organisations, or institutions of religion. In truth, every organisation that depends on members deciding to follow a leader depends on influence, which is the true power of leadership.

For what purpose? It comes down to two key elements.

The first step is to persuade individuals if you can’t compel them to follow. Here is where all of the leadership’s personal and character development is put to use. To convince people to follow, it is crucial for pastors, community leaders, educators, and others of a like calibre to exhibit their skill, connection, and character.

Vision is also needed for influence. The common future of every undertaking or initiative is its vision. No one will see it clearly or come together to bring it about if you can’t link that vision with everyone’s values or convey that vision clearly and passionately.

The second element develops with time. The ability of good leadership to inspire others to embark on their own leadership path is its most important advantage. You’ll encourage others to become leaders as well as yourselves as your consistent and caring leadership grows.

Your network, family, or community may be affected by your personal or professional progress in this manner. This greatly increases your influence and effect without requiring more effort from you.

Making people want to follow you leaves a legacy as well. A mature leader is aware that they are not in charge alone and that they will eventually move on. Preparing the organisation for this change is a part of their job right now.

Even after you have finished your own life’s work, success may be assured by mentoring and developing tomorrow’s leaders. People emulate you when developing future leaders because of who you have become. While relatively few people reach this pinnacle of leadership, those who do leave a lasting impact.

What are the requirements to leave this sort of legacy? the same dedication to character development, interpersonal relationships, and competency as any leadership path. As you progress, your level of dedication will increase, but so will your rewards.

Final Overview

The most crucial thing to keep in mind is that leadership is a process, and that it has the power to change every part of your life over time. Leadership requires persistent discipline, self-reflection and prioritising, character development, and a lifetime commitment to learning. It develops in four stages. Yet when you persist long enough, the advantages grow; you may even be able to alter the course of history. The ability to convince others to follow and embark on their own leadership path is ultimately what determines a leader’s success.

Here is some additional useful guidance for you:

 Find your “top 20.”

You are aware that the top 20% of their employees get 80% of their attention from successful leaders. But do you know who makes up your 20%?

Make a list of every member of your present team to find out. Then ask yourself, “Would I still be able to function if this person stopped supporting me?” Mark the person’s name with a checkmark if the response is no. Don’t tick the box if it would harm but not make or break you.

At the end, you need to have marked 15 to 20% of your squad. These are the folks who should get around 80% of your attention, time, or resources.
